Thanks for introducing Vico's cycle of gods to heroes to humans to new barbarism. A powerful lense for looking at our current situation. I have found Joseph Campbell's writing about the importance and meaning of our universal myths to be equally clarifying.

I think the universal declaration of human rights delineated what states should be able to guarantee as a minimum. Without them, the meaningful life seems difficult. They are still the best consensus we have on a standard of what a state must do. Although I am aware they are being criticised as being hegemonial.
