Ms Sontag might have added: Encourage the kid to ramble or rant from time to time without direction or interruption — while you listen carefully. You will both discover surprising aspects of who this person is — distinguishing what you learn from what you know about sibs, peers, yourself at that age.

This is a lovely idea! In general, the instinct to steer them to our own will is one to be resisted in most cases. Only today I had to stop myself from insisting that the tree in my son's picture should be green!

That was a lovely article. I love reading graffiti from the past but usually it's more recent so it's nice to know nothing has changed! And Rilke... to ask the question of a life's purpose in the dead of night is exactly it. There is only truth then.
